Claude Lanzmann, director of 'Shoah,' dies at age 92

by Wally Amiet (2018-07-17)

Spielberg shot the film in Krakow, Poland, in black-and-white and without storyboards, instead often using hand-held cameras to create a more documentary-like realism. Neeson remembered Spielberg running with a camera and, on the fly, directing him and Kingsley down Krakow streets. "It was exciting. It was dangerous and unforgettable," Neeson said.

"I knew that the subject of the film would be death itself. Death rather than survival," Lanzmann wrote in the autobiography. "For 12 years I tried to stare relentlessly into the black sun of the Shoah."

"It's a completely different city from what it was even 20 years ago," said Joanna Kedzierska, a Warsaw resident who was 6 when communism fell in 1989 and who remembers Warsaw for many years after that as chaotic, dirty and crime-ridden in some neighborhoods.

Netanyahu's comments came as the region braces itself following a tweet by President Donald Trump earlier in the day warning Russia to "get ready" for a missile attack on its ally Syria, suggesting imminent retaliation for a suspected Syrian chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of civilians last weekend.

The boomtown's development is buoyed by the strong Polish economy, with national GDP growing more than sevenfold since 1990 - a 28-year period that hasn't had a single recession. The economy even picked up speed in the first quarter, growing 5.2 percent, as investors appear to brush off international concerns of a weakening democracy in Poland and Russia's resurgence to the East.

Lanzmann joined Sartre's circle and ended up having an affair with Simone de Beauvoir, Sartre's companion who was 17 years older than the young acolyte. Lanzmann left for Israel and moved in with Beauvoir when he returned, from 1952 to 1959, according to "The Patagonia Hare," his autobiography. Sartre, Lanzmann's hero, became a constant in their life together.

"It built a tremendous amount of anger and resentment that I had to do this, that I actually had to go from what you experienced to dinosaurs chasing jeeps," Spielberg told the audience. "I was very grateful later in June, though. But until then, it was a burden. This was all I cared about."

In addition to the official observances, hundreds of other people attended an emotional, "independent" commemoration by Poles furious at a conservative government that seems to tolerate anti-Semitic views despite its official denunciations of anti-Semitism.

Netanyahu vehemently opposes the 2015 deal that curbed Tehran's uranium enrichment levels - a potential pathway to nuclear arms - in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. But the Israeli leader has insisted that the agreement won't stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

In 2013, nearly three decades later, Lanzmann revisited the Holocaust with "The Last of the Unjust," focusing on his interviews in 1975 with a Vienna rabbi who was the last "elder" of the Theresienstadt ghetto, which was used by the Nazis to fool visitors into believing that the Jews were being treated humanely.

A U.S. strike in Syria could have implications for Israel. Israel is also on high alert after Iran, a strong ally of President Bashar Assad, threatened to respond to an airstrike on a Syrian military base on Monday that the Syrian government, Russia and Iran blamed on Israel.

"That aesthetic distance we always talk about between audience and experience? That was gone. And that was trauma," said Spielberg. "There was trauma everywhere. And we captured the trauma. You can't fake that. (The scene) where everyone takes off their clothes was probably the most traumatic day of my entire career - having to see what it meant to strip down to nothing and then completely imagine this could be your last day on earth.

The booming economy is changing the human face of the city, too, attracting Poles from small towns as well as Ukrainians, Russians, Germans and even skilled workers from India. The unemployment rate is just 1.9 percent - far below the 6.3 percent nationwide, itself a historic low.

Lanzmann sometimes used secret cameras to record testimony, including that of Franz Suchomel, a former guard at Treblinka who pointed like a schoolteacher to a blueprint of the camp to show how bodies were disposed of, describing new gas chambers that could "finish off 3,000 people in two hours." At one point during the interview, Lanzmann promised Suchomel that he would not be recorded.

"Claude Lanzmann's cinematic work left an indelible mark on the collective memory, and shaped the consciousness of the Holocaust of viewers around the world, in these and other generations," said Avner Shalev, chairman of Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial.

A study released hours before Wednesday's opening ceremony found that violent attacks on Jews worldwide dropped in 2017, despite a rise in other forms of anti-Semitism, in a year characterized by normalization and mainstreaming of anti-Semitism not seen in Europe since World War II.

Magdalena Barcik, who moved to Warsaw 20 years ago from the small town of Myszkow, measures the progress also in the greater citizen participation allowed in city decisions and in seemingly small changes - like people finally being allowed to sit on the lawns of the elegant Lazienki Park, once the grounds of a king.

"Many people are forced to live in suburbs now because they can't afford to live in the city center anymore," Zubel said. Rents are also rising, meaning that housing "devours a huge part of a salary." Even commercial rents are rising fast as large business centers relocate to Warsaw from cities like London and Paris, she said.

More needs to be done for Holocaust education, Spielberg said: "It's not a pre-requisite to graduate high school, as it should be. It should be part of the social science, social studies curriculum in every public high school in this country."

"He would call me on schedule and he would do 15 minutes of stand-up on the phone," said Spielberg. "I would laugh hysterically because I had to release so much. But the way Robin is on the telephone, he would always hang up on you on the loudest, best laugh you'd give him."

One of the most harrowing interviews Lanzmann did was also among the briefest in "Shoah" - Yitzhak Zuckerman, a leader of the Jewish resistance in Warsaw, who survived Treblinka and saw untold numbers of friends and comrades die. He told Lanzmann bitterly, "if you could lick my heart, it would poison you."According to the Hebrew calendar, the Holocaust Remembrance Day falls on the same date as the Warsaw Ghetto uprising - the ultimately doomed revolt that played such an important role in defining Israel's national psyche.

"We can't finance it and it happens that I really have nothing to make for them to eat," said Pajezetovic, stirring cauldrons of cabbage broth. He said that nobody from Bosnia's institutions have offered any help.

Years of crippling siege and bombardment by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, whose presidential compound is visible from the camp, had already sent tens of thousands of them into a second exile.

Signs of rising nationalism in Poland have strengthened the resolve of those seeking reconciliation. This year a record 2,000 volunteers were handing out the paper daffodils, which have become a moving symbol of Christian Poles expressing their sorrow at the loss of a Jewish community that was Europe's largest before the Holocaust.

In a chilling coincidence, the Kansas students began researching Sendler on the same day - Sept. 23, 1999 - that Sendler's beloved son Adam died of heart failure, Conard said. In letters to the students, Sendler used to address them as "my dear and beloved girls, very close to my heart."

His final work, a series of interviews with four Holocaust survivors stitched together into a single 4½ hour film, was released in French theaters Wednesday. But even before that, Lanzmann showed his breadth with the 2017 documentary, "Napalm," which narrated his visit to North Korea in the late 1950s, including him recounting his unconsummated affair with a Red Cross nurse in the country.

But gentrification has also produced soaring real estate prices, with the cost of apartments 26 percent higher today than even a year ago in Warsaw's central district, according to Karolina Zubel, an economist with the Center for Social and Economic Research in Warsaw.

The power of "Shoah," filmed in the 1970s during Lanzmann's trips to the barren Polish landscapes where the slaughter of Jews was planned and executed, was in viewing the Holocaust as an event in the present, rather than as history. It contained no archival footage, no musical score - just the landscape, trains and recounted memories.

The Warsaw Ghetto uprising broke out April 19, 1943, when about 750 young Jewish fighters armed with just pistols and fuel bottles attacked a much larger and heavily armed German force that was putting an end to the ghetto's existence. In their last testaments they said they knew they were doomed but wanted to die in struggle, at a time and place of their own choosing. They held out nearly a month, longer than some German-invaded countries did.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - A Holocaust survivor told people at a counter-rally held Saturday in a Polish city where far-right groups marched a week earlier that Poland's leaders tolerate organizations with Nazi-inspired ideologies.

They are seeking a court order to stop distribution of the books, "The Age of Hitler 1" and "The Age of Hitler 2. Hitler the Democrat," and 40,000 zlotys ($12,000) in damages for the alleged violation of their personal rights and lack of respect for their wartime suffering, Kozlowski said.

"Schindler's List," made for just $22 million (Spielberg declined a pay check), grossed $321 million worldwide and won seven Academy Awards, including best picture and best director. It also did much to educate the American public on the Holocaust. After the film, Spielberg established the Shoah Foundation, which took the testimony of 52,000 Holocaust survivors.

But the jihadists are unlikely to hold out much longer. Seven years of conflict that made Yarmuk one of the conflict's worst humanitarian and military flashpoints looks set to end in further death and destruction.

"Schindler's List" was a redefining film for Spielberg, who up until then was mostly considered an "entertainer," associated with fantasy and escapism. Since, he has largely gravitated toward more dramatic and historical material like "Amistad," ''Saving Private Ryan," ''Munich," ''Lincoln" and last year's "The Post."

Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz, who organized the rally Saturday, said it was a "shame" that many Poles haven't learned from history and don uniforms of nationalist and fascist organizations that sowed hatred before and during World War II.

Denmark is the only country in the world to officially describe certain residential areas as "ghettos", a term originated in sixteenth century Venice to describe areas of the city to which Jews were restricted.

Open Republic, an association that fights anti-Semitism and xenophobia, organized the ceremony in contrast to what it called the "hollow nationalist pomp" of the government, recalling how the prime minister earlier this year paid tribute to a Polish wartime insurgency unit that had collaborated with the Nazis.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University said assaults specifically targeting Jews fell 9 percent last year. They recorded 327 cases, compared to 361 in 2016, which had already been the lowest number in a decade.
